Stress and anxiety are something many of us experience at different points in our lives. A certain amount of stress can be helpful, particularly when it motivates us to respond to challenges or meet important demands.
However, when stress or anxiety becomes persistent, overwhelming or difficult to switch off, it can begin to affect our thoughts, emotions, behaviour and physical wellbeing.
Understanding what is happening within the mind and body can be an important first step towards making positive changes.
What is stress?
Stress is the body's natural response to pressure or a perceived challenge.
It can occur when we feel that the demands being placed upon us are greater than our ability to cope with them. This might be related to work, relationships, finances, family responsibilities, health concerns or significant changes in our lives.
When we experience stress, the body can respond by releasing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These help prepare us to deal with what the brain perceives as a threat or demand.
In short bursts, this response can be useful. The difficulty can arise when the stress response is activated frequently or remains switched on for long periods.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is also a natural human response. It can help us anticipate potential problems and prepare for situations that may feel uncertain or challenging.
However, anxiety can sometimes continue even when there is no immediate danger.
You may experience thoughts such as:
- What if something goes wrong?
- What if I can't cope?
- What if something happens?
- I can't switch my mind off.
How can stress and anxiety affect everyday life?
Everyone experiences stress and anxiety differently.
Some people may notice changes in their sleep, concentration or energy levels. Others may become more irritable, withdrawn or overwhelmed.
You might find yourself:
- constantly thinking or worrying
- struggling to switch off
- finding it difficult to relax
- avoiding certain situations
- experiencing physical tension
- having difficulty sleeping
- feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks
- becoming more easily frustrated
- feeling that you are always "on alert"
These experiences can sometimes affect confidence, relationships, work and enjoyment of everyday life.
Can we change our patterns?
Our thoughts, emotions and behaviours can become familiar patterns over time.
When we repeatedly respond to a situation in the same way, that response can begin to feel automatic. This does not mean that we are stuck with it forever.
Becoming more aware of our patterns can create an opportunity to approach them differently.
Learning relaxation techniques, developing greater awareness of thoughts and responses, and working therapeutically with underlying patterns can all form part of this process.
How can hypnotherapy help?
Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation, focused attention and therapeutic techniques to help support positive change.
For some people, it can provide an opportunity to step away from the constant activity of everyday life and enter a calmer, more focused state.
During hypnotherapy, we can work towards developing healthier responses to stress, encouraging relaxation and exploring patterns that may be contributing to unwanted thoughts, feelings or behaviours.
Every person is different, so the approach is tailored to the individual and their goals.
Hypnotherapy is not about losing control or being made to do something against your wishes. You remain aware and in control throughout the process.
