Does the sight of a spider send you into a panic? Or the thought of flying make you anxious?

You're not alone.

Fears and phobias are common and can affect people in many ways. A phobia is an intense fear or anxiety linked to a particular object, situation or activity. This can include fear of spiders, fear of flying, fear of heights, fear of the dentist, fear of needles, fear of driving or fear of enclosed spaces, to name but a few.

Fear is a natural and important human emotion. It is part of our body's protective system and helps us recognise potential danger and respond to situations that may feel threatening.

However, sometimes a fear can become stronger than the situation requires, leading to avoidance, distress or a feeling of helplessness.

For some people, this can develop into a phobia, an intense or persistent fear of a particular object, situation or activity.

Understanding how fear works can be the first step towards changing the way we respond to it.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation, focused attention and therapeutic techniques to support positive change.

For some people, hypnotherapy can help create a calmer state in which they can explore the thoughts, associations and responses connected with a particular fear.

Depending on the individual and the nature of the issue, therapeutic work may focus on changing unhelpful thought patterns, strengthening feelings of calm and confidence, or exploring experiences and associations that may be contributing to the fear.

Where the reason for a fear isn't known, hypnotherapy can also be used to explore whether there may be an underlying experience or association connected to it. Understanding where a pattern may have come from can sometimes provide useful insight, while techniques such as relaxation, visualisation and positive suggestions can help you develop a different response to the fear.

The approach is always tailored to the individual.

Hypnotherapy is not about forcing someone to confront a fear or taking away their control. You remain fully aware and in control throughout the process.

Taking the first step

Living with a fear or phobia can sometimes mean organising your life around avoiding certain situations.

You may find yourself thinking ahead about how to escape, turning down opportunities, or experiencing unnecessary anxiety.

Seeking support can provide an opportunity to understand your response and begin exploring breaking unwanted fears.
